ARESTIN®

ARESTIN (minocycline) is a topical antibiotic for gum disease that treats the bacteria that cause periodontal disease in the first place.
Along with scaling and root planing treatment, ARESTIN can assist in preventing your periodontal disease from getting worse and allow you to have a healthy mouth for years to come.

ARESTIN is a powder composed of hundreds of thousands of tiny microspheres that release antibiotics over time. After a deep periodontal cleaning, scaling, and root planing, your periodontist will add ARESTIN to the pocket between your gum and tooth. Completely painless, the ARESTIN powder will dissolve on its own but will continue working long after your visit is over.

ARESTIN FOR GUM DISEASE TREATMENT FAQS

ARESTIN is an antibiotic that is very safe for use in dental patients after, or in conjunction with, treatment for gum disease. Side effects are uncommon but may include gum swelling, tooth pain, headaches or flu-like symptoms. Your dentist can place ARESTIN in 1-2 minutes without the use of anesthesia or needles. Once the ARESTIN has been placed, no follow-up treatment is needed.

After any scaling and root planing procedures, your Marietta dentist will place the ARESTIN antibiotic directly into the affected gum pockets. ARESTIN is applied in powder form. The ARESTIN microspheres will then release bacteria-fighting antibiotics directly to the infected area over time, meaning that ARESTIN can combat bacteria longer and deeper in the gum than just scaling and root planing on its own. As the ARESTIN is placed directly at the location of the gum disease, it can treat it locally, without the rest of the body being affected.

If you have gum disease or periodontal disease, your gums may recede, leaving “pockets” of infected tissue between your gums and teeth. These pockets can worsen and get deeper if left untreated, leading to potential tooth loss. By placing ARESTIN directly in these pockets, your dentist is providing an effective and longer-lasting treatment against bacteria than the scaling and root planing alone.

Usually, antibiotics are taken in pill form but ARESTIN is applied as a powder, directly to the area it is needed. Because it’s made up of microspheres, it starts releasing antibiotics right away and will continue to do so over the course of around two weeks. It’s fast, easy and painless to apply.

Please check with your Marietta dental professional at Kenmar Dental for specific instructions after your gum disease treatment, but in general, patients treated with ARESTIN should follow these guidelines:

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after ARESTIN treatment
  • Avoid hard, sticky or crunchy food like carrots, popcorn and gum for 7 days following your gum disease treatment
  • Do not floss or use a dental pick in the treated area for 10 days
  • After 10 days, resume a good oral healthcare routine by brushing twice daily and flossing your entire mouth at least once per day.

Contact your dental insurance provider to confirm the details of your policy. If ARESTIN is not covered by your insurance, or you do not have dental insurance, call Kenmar Dental for more information about the cost of using ARESTIN and what payment options are available.
